Its not as romantic an origin as you may expect! The day is actually called saint valentines day, its named after a christian martyr named valentine. It wasn't untill fairly recently that its been associated with cupids and love hearts and mass produced cards, which arrived in the 19th century. For more info take a peek at

As with its origins there are a vast array of gifts, baubles, trinkets and chocolates to show your adoration from that special someone. I only now think that cakes and cupcake particularly are being considered as worthy gifts as well. There are so many different option from single cupcakes to cupcake boquet.
